// About the FOCT-05

A complete fibre-optic teaching platform — not a demo toy.

The FOCT-05 lets a student send an analog or digital signal down a real optical fibre and measure what comes out the other end. A 660 nm fibre-optic LED converts the electrical signal to light and launches it into step-index multimode PMMA plastic fibre; a photo-detector recovers it at the far end, through an AC amplifier and comparator.

The on-board function generator (100 Hz–10 kHz sine and TTL square), the 9-pin RS232C PC-to-PC serial link and SMA cable ends polished for numerical-aperture measurement make it a complete teaching bench for undergraduate and diploma communication labs. Manufactured and QC-passed by Narayan Microwave Technologies in Modinagar, supplied with manuals and a set of patch cords, and dispatched pan-India with a GST invoice.

// Background

What is a fibre optics trainer, and what do students learn?

A fibre optics trainer is a benchtop kit that teaches optical-fibre communication end to end. On the FOCT-05, a 660 nm LED converts an electrical signal into light and launches it into step-index multimode PMMA plastic fibre, and a photo-detector recovers it at the far end. Students drive it from the on-board function generator, work through the AC amplifier and comparator stages, compare analog (350 kHz) and digital (2.5 MHz) transmission, measure the fibre's numerical aperture and acceptance angle from its polished SMA ends, and run a live PC-to-PC serial link over the optical channel.

// Experiments

What you can run with it.

01

Numerical aperture & acceptance angle

Use the SMA-polished fibre ends to measure the fibre's numerical aperture (better than 0.5) and acceptance angle (better than 60°).

02

Analog optical transmission

Launch the 100 Hz–10 kHz sine output down the fibre and study analog transmission within the 350 kHz analog bandwidth.

03

Digital (TTL) transmission

Drive the link with the TTL square-wave output and the comparator to study digital transmission up to the 2.5 MHz digital bandwidth.

04

LED source & photo-detector study

Characterise the 660 nm fibre-optic LED as a source and the photo-detector as a receiver, including the recovered signal through the AC amplifier.

05

PC-to-PC optical data link

Connect two computers through the 9-pin RS232C Tx and Rx ports and exchange serial data over the fibre as a working optical link.

06

Step-index guiding & refractive index

Relate the core (1.492) and cladding (1.406) refractive indices to how light is trapped and guided along the 1000-micron step-index fibre.

// FAQ

Fiber optics trainer — questions.

What wavelength does the FOCT-05 transmitter use?

The transmitter is a fibre-optic LED with a peak emission wavelength of 660 nm — visible red light. It is matched to PMMA plastic optical fibre and lets students see the light coupling into the fibre while the on-board sections drive and recover the signal.

What bandwidth does the trainer support for analog and digital signals?

The analog bandwidth is 350 kHz and the digital bandwidth is 2.5 MHz. The built-in function generator supplies a 100 Hz–10 kHz sine wave (amplitude adjustable) and a 100 Hz–10 kHz TTL square wave to drive both analog and digital experiments.

What fibre and connectors are used, and can I measure numerical aperture?

It uses step-index multimode PMMA plastic fibre (core refractive index 1.492, cladding 1.406, 1000-micron fibre diameter, 2.2 mm outer diameter) terminated in standard SMA connectors. Both cable ends are polished, so you can measure numerical aperture — the fibre's NA is better than 0.5 with an acceptance angle better than 60°.

Can the FOCT-05 do PC-to-PC communication?

Yes. It has a serial PC-to-PC link using 9-pin D-type RS232C Tx and Rx ports, so two computers can exchange serial data over the optical fibre — a practical demonstration of a fibre-optic data channel using the on-board PC-to-PC Communication section.

What are the power and interconnection requirements?

The trainer has a built-in DC power supply that runs on 230 V ±10%, 50 Hz mains. Its board sections — Function Generator, 660 nm FO Transmitter, FO Receiver, AC Amplifier, Comparator and PC-to-PC Communication — interconnect through 2 mm banana sockets, and a set of patch cords is included.

Who makes the FOCT-05, and do you ship across India with a GST invoice?
